Empowering Our Community: A Look Back and the Road Ahead

As we approach the Beith Trust Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 15, 2024, it’s a time of reflection and anticipation. Over the years, Beith Trust has been a beacon of community-led initiatives, fostering a sense of belonging and actively engaging in the sustainable regeneration of our community. Our approach has always been unique—avoiding traditional consultancy and surveys for ongoing dialogue and creative feedback mechanisms.

A Year in Review

This past year has been transformative. Despite considerable challenges, we’ve seen remarkable community participation and engagement and the successful implementation of several projects that have made a significant difference in the lives of our residents. From supporting families in crisis, and being a friendly voice at the end of a phone through to strategic action plans and captial development of our Estate, our efforts have been multifaceted.

At the heart of Beith Trust’s success is our commitment to engagement with our people. We believe in empowering our members by keeping the community in the driving seat. Our projects are not just for the community but by the community. This year, we’ve seen incredible creativity from our members, whether in feedback sessions or the actual roll-out of community initiatives.

MAKING CHALLENGES INTO TRIUMPHS: A JOURNEY WITH E-BIKING

In the face of adversity, sometimes all it takes is a small push to embark on a transformative journey. Meet Brian McBroom, whose life took an unexpected turn when the simple act of trying out an e-bike became the start of a remarkable new journey.

The impact on his physical well-being has been nothing short of amazing. Shedding two and a half stone in weight, the improvements in fitness and overall mobility have been drastic. What was once considered an impossible feat turned into a daily routine, with Brian now taking a spin on his bike nearly every day.

Beyond the physical changes, the positive impact on his mental health has been huge. Brian now views life with a fresh perspective, breaking free from the cycle of work-sleep-repeat. The bike has become a source of joy, offering an escape and a newfound appreciation for life.

When asked if he would recommend trying e-bikes to others facing similar mobility challenges, the answer was a resounding “Definitely.” Particularly for those with leg or back injuries, the e-bike’s assistive features proved to be a game-changer. The initial fears of speed and unfamiliarity were quickly forgotten and it was easier to use than be imagined.

Looking ahead, Brian expressed a strong desire to continue cycling as a hobby. Embracing both e-biking and traditional cycling, the newfound options offer a versatile approach to staying active and engaged.

For those contemplating the leap into e-biking, Brian offers simple yet clear advice: “Just go for it.” Confronting doubts and fears is a necessary step, and the rewards are well worth it. Brian’s journey from initial nerves to joining group cycles and even cycling with family showcases the transformative potential of trying new experiences.

In conclusion, Brian’s story serves as an inspiration. It highlights the strength of the human spirit and the huge power of embracing change, proving that sometimes, all it takes is a pedal forward to embark on a journey of growth and improvement.

Beith Trust’s Volunteer-Managed Project, Garnock Valley Helping Hands, Receives£5,000 Donation from Persimmon Homes

In a heartwarming gesture of community support, Persimmon Homes has contributed a very generous £5,000 donation to Beith Trust’s volunteer-managed project; Garnock Valley Helping Hands. This contribution, which was made through Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme; supporting charities and good causes in areas where the homebuilder operates, will further enhance the project’s mission to provide essential support to families in need within the Garnock Valley.

Garnock Valley Helping Hands is an exceptional volunteer-led project that focuses on recycling baby and toddler clothes, toys, and childcare necessities and gifting them to vulnerable families in the Garnock Valley. Operated by dedicated volunteers, the project aims to alleviate financial burdens on families by offering these items free of charge.

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to be back and see that not only has Helping Hands grown and gained a reputation, but they’re even better established to be organised for this year’s event.” Anthea Dickson, SNP councillor for Garnock Valley, commented.

“I remember when Helping Hands first started, it started off about three years ago and it was a single Facebook post, and the support that has built up over the past three years has been absolutely fantastic.” Margaret Johnson, SNP Councillor for Garnock Valley added.

The £5,000 donation from Persimmon Homes will significantly develop the impact of Helping Hands in the Garnock Valley community. The funds will be used to expand the project’s reach, ensuring that more families in need can benefit from the provision of essential items for their children.

“The Garnock Valley Helping Hands project makes a real difference to hundreds of local families in need and we’re delighted to be able to support their efforts with this donation.” Chris Logan, Persimmon West Scotland Managing Director, stated,  “We want to support the communities we operate in and whether it’s through their Christmas toy drive or the help they offer all year round, I hope the donation will allow the group to reach even more families across Garnock Valley.”

Garnock Valley Helping Hands encourages individuals and businesses alike to join the cause, either through volunteerism or additional contributions. Together, we can continue making a positive difference in the lives of families in the Garnock Valley.

Excitement is brewing in Beith as Beith Community Development Trust has been named a finalist in the prestigious Ayrshire Business Awards 2023. Our organisation has been shortlisted for the coveted Community Award, a recognition of its unwavering commitment to fostering positive change in the Garnock Valley community. The winner will be revealed at the award ceremony set to take place at the Ayr Racecourse on October 6th, and fingers and toes are crossed in anticipation!

For the past decade, Beith Trust has been at the forefront of pioneering community-driven change in the Garnock Valley. Since its establishment in 2013, the Trust has made it its mission to drive sustainable regeneration in the region. What sets us apart is our unique approach, which focuses on investing in people, the local environment, and businesses alike.

Beith, like many other towns across Scotland, faced the challenges brought about by the closure of mass employment industries in the 1980s. This turbulent period left Beith grappling to redefine its identity and envision a positive future. It was in response to this very challenge that Beith Trust was born.
